Working for a small business is quite a culture shock after having
spent most of my working career in a large corporation.
Initially, I expected to have the flexibility of hours and other
opportunities to come my way due to the personal contact with the
owners of the business. The difference between the small business and
large corporation is that the small business can become totally reliant
on your presence. As such, the success of the business is reliant not
only on the owners but also the employees. If the I the employee am
ill, I need to think twice about calling in sick as there is no other
person to cover for my workload. This actually becomes quite
restrictive as although you are an employee, the business becomes a
part of you - you carry the progress of the business on your shoulders
in the same capacity as the owners or directors of the business.
