Payless overall is a good company to work for, if you are happy working
by yourself for most of the day. As with many small box retailers
Managers are placed on salary and considered "exempt". That means no
breaks and single coverage until 3-4pm. There are no additional hours
for training new associates; therefore the Managers get to work open to
close for several days after hiring someone. Low to medium volumn
stores run on 100-125 hours per week with the manager working 45+. It
is very challenging to complete all tasks, keep current with associate
development, and implement the new service behaviors culture on limited
resources. I have a hard time understanding how retail managers as a
whole qualify for "exempt" status. Store Managers have no control over
in store promotions, displays, store hours, product mix, employee
numbers or payroll. No employees may be hired without the approval of
a Training Supervisor or District Manager. Payless as a company offers
reasonable benefits to their employees at the full-time or above
level. The basic package of medical, dental, vision, life, diability,
401 (k), vacation, sick time, and personal time is pretty good-if a
little pricey. Where Payless has the greatest problem is in it's
ability to advance beyond the store management level. When you look at
Payless you see an 80-20 split in managers. 80% female, 20% male.
When you look at the District Manager level and above what you see is
the exact reverse. As with any retail job Payless is a fairly physical
company. Employees can expect to get a little dirty, have no finger
nails, and aching feet by the end of the day. On the plus side the job
is really not that hard, you don't have to wear a uniform, and you
don't go home smelling of grease.
