Good. If OfficeMax is acquired by Boise there will be a lot of potential
for it to grow. The greatest hindrance has been the top management. The
old style of micro-management has created an atmosphere where to survive,
top executives need to be yes-men instead of competent decision makers.
There has been a lot of turnover at the top. Senior executives generally
work out their contract and then leave. It is very difficult to get
things accomplished in an atmosphere where no one can make a decision. As
a result, many decisions are very short sighted. The senior management
does not think long-term, they are more concerned with cutting costs and
keeping salaries low so that they can get their bonuses. Many decisions
have been made that actually end up costing the company in the long run.
However, when the average executive cashes out their options and is gone
in three years, there is no incentive for long term planning.
However, in spite of the tough culture, there are many good people and
lots of potential. With a competent CEO at the helm, OfficeMax could do
very well.
