Working for Northwestern Mutual was very exciting at first. During
training I was introduced to several selling concepts that seemed
pecululiar to me. All of the training focused on insuracne. I
considered that and let it go, becuase risk management and insurance is
the foundation to good financial stability. I had worked for financial
services companies before in the back office. I had an understanding of
basic financial planning concepts. After training as the weeks went by
I noticed that while we had training in securities, (very inadequite)I
found that whenever I needed advise I was always urged to find a way to
solve the problem with life insurance. Even when there was no need for
more insurance. I had an interview with the General Agent of a
Louisvilee, KY office about my future plans. I told him that I wanted
to allocate my streams of income, with annuities, investments and group
employer sales. His response floored me; "just sell insurance, you
won't make any money with investments"!
The culture at Northwestern Mutual is very suffocating. Reps are told
they are running there own business, yet the General Agent makes it very
clear that he's the boss. What a contradiction.
Additionally there is not much diversity. A comment was made that
minorities and women are kept around to keep the Department of Labor off
their backs.
Reps are charged rediculous fines for being late to a an internal
meeting. It never happened to me, but I saw it happen to others.
The culture rating, is VERY BAD!
