Fairly relaxed newsroom work environment. However, deadline pressure is
constant as the newspaper is a daily publication. The culture at work
is
not fantastic. The Paper runs extremely lean from a financial
perspective, which makes it difficult to attract good staff because the
wages are not as attractive as some of the other News Limited papers in
Australia. However, Darwin is located in the tropics, which means that
we do attract some quality staff who are seeking a more relaxed
lifestyle, which is hard to find in Australia's two major cities of
Melbourne and Sydney.
Being a tropical city, the dress code in most places in Darwin is very
relaxed. Management staff such as myself are expected to wear smart
work
pants and a business shirt. A tie is not required.
Because of the high turnover of staff the opportunities for advancement
within our company are very good. Anyone who displays an above average
ability in their area will generally find advancement comes to them
quite easily.
In the management position in which I work, my hours can range from 9-
10
hours a day through to 14, sometimes 6 or even 7 days a week. However,
usually my week is made up of 5 12 hour days starting at 11am.
