When I first started working at Nichols, it was in a small office
complex in Kennesaw, GA. There were five consultants and we did
everything from responding to RFP's to generating software application
prototypes. It was a great environment to work in because we had
control of the businesses we targeted and the projects we accepted. We
quickly found our niche in state and local government. What I liked
most was the diversity in my role. One day I would be researching
RFP's, generating responses to RFP's and then other days because of the
demand, I would be working as a software developer (which I hadn't done
in years) but it was always very challenging. The corporate office in
Jackson, MS was not involved and we ran as an independent office for a
period of time. We were very successful in generating business, clients
and projects. We were proud to be self-sufficient from the corporate
office. The challenges of starting a regional office were exciting as
well as demanding but I didn't mind the extra work. Everything our
office did was because of our strong team.
Once we moved to our office to Atlanta and the corporate office got
involved in our business strategies, the atmosphere changed and we were
no longer able to generate our own clients and projects. The projects
slowed down and morale was low for the staff. It wasn't the
challenging, dynamic environment I started with. I could see that the
Atlanta office wasn't going to remain successful and eventually, the
office closed down.
I believe that we could have made a real presence for Nichols in Atlanta
if the corporate office allowed us to continue to run on our own.
