Nextel is sees itself as a holdover from the telecom boon years of
technology industry. It has approprite pride in its accomplishments
and
prides itself on doing the impossible. The recent merger with Sprint
is
an effort to inject this culture into the older Sprint organization.
Expect long hours an unforgiving clients within and without the fuction
you support. Most are understanding and kind, especially we new
hires.
But once you get the lay of the land, you need to work at a pretty
frantic pace. Egos can loom large and talent usually matches the
blustering. The focus in on the work. Have your own life together
for
fun and sun, but don't expect much talk about such activities at the
office.
Management is hands off and you are expected to manage up and down,
either yourself or your team to sometimes undefined objectives. This
is
the entreprenuerial culture. Sometimes you are tasked with defining
how
best to solve the problem or service the client, customer. Don't wait
for hints, and direction. This is an initiative factory.
The most capable technology is facing the customer. Be prepared to be
frustrated by internal processes, procedure and policies around HR and
internal employee life issues.
Expect a wide reign and opportunity for advancement, challenge and
occasional excitement. You are on the cutting edge and it feels that
way. If you don't mind being out on a ledge from time to time and
surviing on your own, you love the environment. If you feel
comfortable
in structure and defined duties the place can and will frustrate you.
Industry normal compensation but some boses try to address top
performers to the extent they can with rewards. Hours can be long to
extreme. Here, the work is the juice.
