It is much like a high school popularity contest. Lots of stepping on
your co-workers to get face time with upper management. You need
to be visible and well liked by the executive staff -- results don't
really matter even though they tell you that's all that counts. There is
also lots of turnover and lends to the chaotic atmosphere. Poor
communication throughout. Very little proactive work and lots of
reactive work, but that is what happens when your business is
losing money. The execs only care about hitting numbers so that
their division won't be sold off. That leaves little room for planning
or
developing a strategy and following it. Lots and lots of effort goes
into any project for any retailer that waves a nickel in front of them
just to be able to hit sales numbers -- profitability can be fudged.
Often leads to poorly executed programs due to lack of planning or
following a strategy. Not a lot of diversity. Long hours are
encouraged even if your work is done -- just hang out to make it
look like you're really dedicated to the company. Perception is
reality to execs. Overall employee morale is low. People live in fear
of losing their jobs.
