I can only speak for the IT Dept simply because this is where I wasted
4.5 years of my life working for an on-site consulting firm. You see,
until 3/2004 the NY Daily News outsourced it's Network Operations
Center, it's Help Desk, and it's Voice Operations. Sometime in January
2004, the CIO was forced to resign due to some shady business
practices, and they decided to cut all contracts immediately. This
move allowed the, then Director of IT who was an up, and comer to
strategically place himself in a position to make the CFO believe he
was a God, and acknowlege him as the new IT God. He was promoted to VP
of IT, and then started cleaning house. It didn't matter that for 4.5
years he took credit for all of my suggestions, I worked 10 hour days,
was on call 24/7, and was constantly beeped. It didn't matter that on
9/11 I worked 26 hours on site to ensure that his network was up, and
operational, or that in the black-out of 2003, it was a repeat
performance, it didn't matter one bit. It didn't matter that I
structure my Dept from the ground up, and kept him looking good. It
didn't matter that I had a wife and 2 kids, and that I was one of his
right hand men. All he cared about was cutting costs, so he cut my
contract completely in order to save the Operations Manager job which
payed about 125K to a man that was never there, and spend 60% of his
day smoking and coughing. He's now gone too by the way. Once I was
gone he gave my position to one of my techs at 30K less than what I was
making at the time.
Take it from me, if you wanna work at this place, especially in the IT
Dept, he will make you bleed before he says a simple "thank you".
DO NOT CONSIDER WORKING AT THE DAILY NEWS. HE (THE VP OF IT) DOES NOT
HAVE A HEART, DOES NOT CARE ABOUT ANYONE BUT HIMSELF, AND WILL FIRE YOU
WITHOUT REMORSE.
I only hope that someday God will have mercy on him, and not pay him
back for all the bad he's done to all of his ex-employees.
