Through a referral I obtained an interview for the position of Business
Development Officer with a mid-size commercial bank. The first meeting
was with the manager for the region I would be reporting to. With a
number of years experience underwriting loans in the market I would be
hired for I felt well qualified for the position.
The interview covered my latest position and my credit and lending
background. We also discussed lending philosophy and my familiarization
with bank products in general.
Upon the completion of the meeting the interviewer stated he would be
speaking to the divisional manager to arrange a follow up meeting.
I sent a thank you letter expecting to receive a reply within a
reasonable time. Nothing was forthcoming. A second letter expressing my
interest in the position also received no response.
While I am 61 years old I appear at least ten years younger. While my
resume covers only the last 31 years of my employment, during our
meeting the interviewer presented a number of questions that seemed to
probe my age.
While this is something that cannot be proved it seems my age is a
factor in the bank's sudden lack of interest in me.
