This operation provides I.T. support for a major manufacturing
facility. The corp also is a major "testor" of Microsoft products. As
such, employees of the company get to use "beta" versions of products
from MS and discounted prices ($28 on XP) for personal use while
employed by Navistar. The office atmosphere is friendly and the dress
code is casual (golf shirts and slacks or comperable).
The company rates very high (Infoweek top 10) for computer inovation and
employee development. The manufacturing facility was selected as one of
the 10 best by a national manufacturing magazine several years ago.
On the down side, current I.T. management becomes a "yes man" on both
sides of any disagreement. If there is a dissagreement over staffing or
personnel, for instance, the management agrees with a supervisor then
agrees with the plant management when talking with them, then agrees
with supervision again. They won't take a stand for any side of an
issue.
The Company invests a great deal of effort on management of inventory
and manufacturing processes but there appears to be little or no
training from the corp on how to supervise or manage people.
Recently, the IT organization of about 250 people (25 local) sent out
an "anonymous" survey of employee thoughts and attitudes. They received
6 responses from the local group. There was a department wide meeting
covering the results of the survey. The answers shown were so obvious
that you could tell which answer was made by which employee.
