Employment as a NTSB investigator is best characterized as years of
frustration, fear, and stress punctuated by brief moments of
unimaginable excitement and delight. Investigators' field work can be
very interesting, exciting. Workload (of investigators) is highly
unpredictable, ranging from moderately demanding to completely
overwhelming. Requirement to be on continuous (uncompensated) standby
for immediate travel is huge drawback, and difficult for those with
family, friends, or a life. "Like it or leave it" culture and
inexperienced/untrained managers results in low morale, frustration,
sense of helplessness. Unionized, but union is weak and intimidated by
management. Very high turnover for a Federal agency (except within
management); consequently, opportunity for advancement generally limited
to current position. Business casual dress code, some flexibility in
office work schedule, and LIMITED telecommuting are a plus. Poor choice
for someone with physical limitations or inability to handle stress.
You have to have a thick skin and a strong stomach for this kind of work.
