The culture is a joke. We had these "weather reports" every quarter.
Some of the comments from outside Ohio were terrible. I worked in
Kalamazoo (Oshtemo) in Project Services. We were requird to obtain our
own work. If you wanted to make your allocation numbers of 100% you had
to make sure you found a project you could work on. Not your boss as
NCC will tell you, you had to find the work. I went to my boss and
asked "How do I do this." Her response was "Don't bother me I have my
own numbers to meet." I went for over 1 year with no project work. No
manager at any time, yes I did ask frequently and often, would tell me
what I could learn or do to become more valuable. So I sat and started
to learn from free tutorials on the Internet.
On my evaluation my boss said that she could not count my learning
things over the internet because I could not prove I had the skill. I
had certificates that the web sites printed out after each course but
she said I could make those up.
The only opportunity to advance was if you were located in Cleveland.
The hours were long if you wanted to meet your allocation goals. If you
were honest and only charged for time you were actually working on the
project you had to work 80 hours a week to keep at 100% allocated.
Diversity in hours. If I was one minute late, my boss was at my desk
telling me I had to make up the time. If I had to put in a project that
required me to be at work until after midnight I was still required to
work my 8-5 shift. I was salaried.
All of this workd on well at the end. NCC decided to get rid of all the
Project Services and Application Services staff in Kalamazoo. Over 100
people. We were told that it was because the housing market could not
sustain the growth. That was in February, 2003. In April, 2004 NCC
announced their best year in housing ever. NCC had been outsourcing IT
jobs to India since 1999. We were told that would never impact our jobs
but shortly after we got severed we found out those of us who got jobs
(6) in Cleveland that NCC was indeed hiring Indian workers to replace
us.
Jim Hughes said we he told me on February 25, 2003 that they were not
replacing us with TATA(India IT Workers) He also said in 1999 that
the "TATA workers had a far better work ethic than American workers." I
remember his words because I thought WOW he has got guts saying that in
a room of American workers. He knew what he was doing and lied about
it. I don't mind being severed in fact I am very happy working where I
do now. I hate being lied to. Business' should have the guts to tell
the truth and live with their decisions.
I pulled my money out of NCC because I don't want my finances handled
overseas.
The worst part is that if you talk to NCC workers in the branches or any
other division outside IT they know nothing about this.
