National City's Leadership Development program is designed for people
graduating from a tier-1 or tier-2 MBA program. Getting in is extremely
competitive, and new hires are treated very well. The program is
designed for people who are interested in banking/finance but are open
to a variety of career options, such as loan officer, corporate finance,
investment banking, syndications, derivatives, treasury management,
private wealth management, etc. Training is offered in a variety of
positions over the course of 12 to 18 months. An offer for a "permanent"
job is usually made over the course of the rotation program when a good
fit develops between the trainee and the department she/he is rotating
through.
The corporate culture is conservative. People work hard, and
compensation generally reflects the requirements of the job. Work hours
depend on the position, but a 10-hour workday is probably typical for
people in the Leadership Development program.
Dress code is midwest conservative -- nice suits Monday through
Thursday, with business casual on Fridays.
There is a lot of competition for advancement opportunities, but the
bank moves people into new roles frequently, helping open up
opportunities often. People who come through the Leadership Development
program are expected to move up quickly and change jobs every two to
five years.
