Goddard was an exciting yet beaureaucratic place. On one hand we had
the geniuses. Working with them was highly rewarding and challenging.
Though they were much smarter than me, they gave me much needed guidance
on my projects and my career. However, we also had the beaueaucrats.
NASA is based on PR, not profit. So in order to get funding for a
project you need to show not only technical relevance but also mass
appeal. The managers I worked for knew little of the technical gold
mine within NASA. They were more interested in themselves and climbing
the corporate ladder. The hours at Goddard were flexible, and you don't
need to work more than a 40 hour week (unless you have a deadline like
and upcoming launch). It's exciting when your mission is selected for a
launch date and to watch years of work come to fruition. But to get
there you have to go through acres of red tape. There are peer reviews
for practically everything. They come at you nonstop until absolutely
nothing has escaped scrutiny.
