National Academy of Sciences is a non-profit and thus no real corporate
culture. Similar to all non-profits, we are a bit less efficient than
for-profits. Over 70% of issues we cover originate from Congressional
mandates and therefore we often find ourselves mired in similar
bureacratic layers.
Diversity is fairly good.
Hours are flexible and family values supported. Benefits are
unbelievable, with a 401k, great health benefits, partial funding for
education and staff development, and 24 days off per year (vacation plus
holidays plus sick).
Dress code is casual, with casual Fridays that allow for jeans and
sandals.
Opportunities for advancement are fair. Most study directors have PhDs
and most staff that want to move up to this level need one as well,
which often leaves a gap between lower and upper staff.
