The outlook will continue to be positive and growing, especially as
health care issues such as the uninsured and childhood obesity explode.
There are no obvious competitors for what we do, although we do compete
with other health policy research firms and think tanks for some of our
funding. Despite this, the majority of our funding (greater than 70%)
comes from Congress via federal agencies and so our core funding is a
strength since there will always be issues that need to be answered to
the extent they can by science.
Distribution channels for our materials include mainly Congressional
audiences, professional societies, and non-profit advocacy groups. We
are regularly cited in the news.
Our primary products are evidence-based health policy reports. We form
expert committees - who volunteer their time - to spend 1-2 years
looking at the evidence on a controversial issue and then provide that
in a written report to Congress (usually Congress or a federal agency)
to provide enough information for them to base a decision or legislation
on.
Employee morale is fair. Due to the nature of our funding and the
specificity of some of our reports, staff turnover is high. As with most
non-profits, the bureacracy and inefficiency can be frustrating.
However, the topics and work covered are attractive in that you feel you
are doing "good" for society.
