If you are interested in a good entry-level opportunity after
undergrad, then NCR is a good place for you. NCR's presence in
Southern California (San Diego and LA) is in the form of Teradata R&D,
so the majority of positions are technical - software, hardware, and
some professional services.
The culture is very laid-back and easy going. Dress is very casual,
with some variation among groups (e.g., some groups it's common to see
shorts and T-shirts, but not all), but virtually everyone wears tennis
shoes to work. The hours are very easy as well, and there is very
little micromanagement. As long as you are getting your work done on
time, then people dont' really bother you too much. It's very rare
that you need to work more than 40 hrs a week. Often times things are
pretty slow and you can leave when you please. If your work is up to
par, then nobody really cares too much. NCR has perks, like the
ability to work from home if you like. The culture is dominiated by
older people though, and that can be boring if you are fresh out of
college. The majority of people that work here are 40 years old and up.
The opportunities for advancement are fairly limited in my opinion.
You can move up in salary bands, but if you are an engineer then you
will remain an engineer for the rest of your career unless you transfer
to professional services or some sort of product management role after
many years with the company. I would not advise any young college grad
to come here for a career. But I do think that it's a good place to
start your career if you want some solid work experience that you can
put on your resume.
