Job Title Workplace Survey
Program Manager The company has a history of being a good employer, and some of that legacy still remains, particularly in employee benefit packages. However, poor management in recent years has left the company in a weak competitive position, and as the focus has shifted to short term cost containment to stem losses, concern for employees has degraded significantly. The company has published "constant respect for people" as a core value, but people are the biggest cost in the company, and costs are being cut for short term savings without much consideration for the long term impact. From where I sit it is very difficult to understand what the companys strategy is, and how we expect to become competitive again in the future. Some characteristics of the corporate culture: Presentation is more important than content. Selling is more important than delivering. Senior management opinion is more important than data and information. Reporting good news is more important than reporting truth. Diversity is espoused, but not actively valued, although that's more the case with diversity of thought than in support for minority groups. To call something a Motorola wide Standard is an oxymoron. You will never be rewarded for preventing a crisis; you will always be rewarded for resolving one. Even if you started it. NIH (not invented here) syndrome is alive and well in the company. One of the internal jokes about the company is that the M in Motorola stands for Meetings, as there are many of them. Also, they never start or end on time. There is no real standard for work hours, and the tendency is to work about 40 hour weeks. The dress code is whatever you feel comfortable wearing, with some employees in ties and some in shorts almost any day of the week. Overall, I would say opportunities for advancement are fairly decent if you align with the culture, and the pay scale is fairly generous if you are considered one of the highly effective employees, per your employee evaluation.
