Morale is very low on the retail side due to the move to Westchester.
The company will have a very hard time recruiting low level and mid
level employees to work at the site, as it is a hard commute for anyone
except Manhattan and Westchester residents. DW used to be located in
the World Trade Center, so many long term employees live in NJ and Long
Island. As a result they now have 2 hour+ commutes. This effects
morale as well as productivity, as people leave promptly at 5PM and
their quality of life has drastically diminished. In addition, what
young hungry newly minted graduate wants to have an hour plus commute
when they can work in midtown for a different company? You can't meet
your friends for drinks, duck out to buy tix for Bway, etc. if you work
so far from Manhattan.
MS will always be second or third on the retail side and never first
because most people who make the big decisions look and think exactly
the same. Very few women and almost no minorities are involved in idea
generation, product development, or marketing. Senior Management is
not willing to be a trend setter in any area - they always let someone
else do it first, then decide if they want to follow [and are often too
late and miss the trend entirely]. Ideas from lower level employees
are not brought into the pipeline, and these are the folks who have
their ear to the ground and see the train coming.
My assessment: if you are a white guy, MS retail is a good place. If
you are a woman, not as great and you will have to work a little harder
to overcome to male domination. If you are a minority, your road will
be much tougher, but you will not be overtly discriminated against -
your skill set will have to be air tight and you will have to far
outperform your peers in order to get recognition and promotions.
