Corporate Culture:
History: Milacron is a 100+ year old company, established by the Geir
Family. The company was founded on integrity, promoting a family
atmosphere supported by a strong work ethic. Milacron was truly the
place to work for competitive wages, benefits, profit sharing, etc. The
Geir family went as far as offered employees a vacation bonus equal to
your weekly wage so that they could enjoy a vacation.
After the last Geir family member retired everything changed. Dan Meyer
became CEO (now retired and replaced by Ron Brown). Over the past 18+
years any resemblance to the original company has long since passed.
Current Culture: Downsizing, restructuring, Extensive early
retirements & lay-off with the majority from the manufacturing floor,
clerical/administrative, and a few mid-management. The company over all
is Executive Management ($100K+ avg.) & Management ($70K avg.) heavy.
Pay cuts for the balance not in Executive positions.
Worst thus far, in 2001 they implemented an 8% across the board cut in
wages for employees of the Plastics Technologies Group. Simultaneously
Executive Management voted themselves an 11% increase in salary.
Milacron employees learned of managements' salary increase when it was
published by the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Future: Milacron is presently working toward moving the majority of
their manufacturing to China & India. Domestic manufacturing will be
limited to minor assembly, Sales, and Field Service.
Opportunity for Advancement: Milacron offers an excellent tuition
reimbursement program. Existing Supervisors should have at least a
Bachlors degree. An Executive position requires a Masters degree.
Opportunity for advancement within the company without the degree is
doubtful regardless of length of service.
Milacron does not post job opportunities on the bulletin board, so you
really don't know what is out there. They must 1st contact your
immediate supervisor for permission to talk to you about the
opportunity. If your immediate supervisor says "no" he cannot afford to
let you go, you never know there is an opportunity out there or that you
are in the running.
Equal opportunity: Not a strong attribute to Milacron. With 400+ jobs
in the shop there are approx. (3) black employees. The majority of the
minority positions are held by bi-lingual employees (Chinese, Japanese,
Spanish, etc.) A handfull of women are in Supervisory positions -
Credit & Collections, Accounting, and Engineering, but we've seen very
sharp women after obtaining their Masters in Finance, keying in invoices
for payment, only to leave the company. Young white males with a
Masters degree will have the best opportunity here.
Retirement: Today, new employees are not offered a retirement.
Milacron now offers employees a 3% matching 401K program. Existing
employees have a compromised retirement.
Companies are required to pay into Social Security on their employee's
behalf. Example: If Milacron pays $2,000 annually into Social
Security on your behalf, over a 30 year career, Milacron will have paid
$60,000 into Social Security for you (besides what you have also
contributed from your compensation package).
Once you retire, Milacron deducts the $60,000 from your retirement
taking the money back which was paid in to Social Security for you.
Thus, your retirement is now down to $500/month for 30 years of
service. This is legal in the State of Ohio. When Milacron's
retirement fund becames heavy. Executive Management votes themselves a
7-figure retirement bonus.
Hours: 8:00 - 5:00
Dress Code: Professionally casual except for Corporate meetings which
require white shirt, black suit.
The majority of Milacron employees have been here a very long time, and
the day to day people are very friendly, and create a good working
environment. The majority of personnel hope one day we will see a
resurgence of the Geir family into the organization.
