The hours as analyst were terrible... but that is expected. The amount
of politics, especially in the Chicago office was disgusting and
somewhat shocking given the size of the office. People were not
rewarded for their merits whatsoever. Despite the lack of tech work at
the time, every analyst in the Tech group got a top bonus in 2001
because the person handling the process was a director in the
technology group.
Overall I thought the culture was loose and I liked that, but Merrill
always seems to come up short relative to other firms. Whether it was
compensation or benefits, Merrill always seemed to be taking short-
cuts. I thought it was a good experience, but if you want investment
banking experience I would recommend working for Goldman, Morgan
Stanley, or Salomon Bros. before Merrill (maybe even CSFB).
