Merrill has shed a lot of bulk in the past few years and is a lot
leaner under E. Stanley O'Neal. Some internal political problems (with
former EVP Arshad Zakaria) were a big distraction. With all of the
lateral hires and re-organization, the firm is definitely advancing up
the league tables now, especially as M&A and underwriting pick up.
Overall, I would say that Merrill is one of the top firms and has
repositioned itself at the top, just behind Goldman, but definitely
ahead of Morgan Stanley (the so called MGM group of Merrill, Goldman,
and Morgan).
