Merrill looks better than it has in a while. It's very lean and the
business units have all been massively retooled. Stan O Neal doesn't
have the "Mother Merrill" friendly reputation that the last CEO did,
but he's an extremely powerful leader in terms of change management.
The platform is the most comprehensive on the street and the
architecture is very open, so you have complete freedom in terms of
investment style. From what I can tell from friends at other firms,
Merrill has (recently developed) much better technology and financial
planning capabilities than the other retail shops, so it makes it
easier to target high net worth. Merrill is very supportive of women
and minorities and is definitely trying to create a diverse work
environment.
