Project Manager Doing about 120K per year in high end consulting. Dealing with Merck's HR people is an experience. First off, Merck outsourced most of their HR to Kelly Services. So the person you are dealing with on the phone is not a Merck employee. After the usually hemming and hawing from HR consisting of what do yout think? do you think its a good match, etc... ad nauseum they made a verbal offer. 95K with 3 weeks vacation at a 5 level. I told them I had to think about it. Got the package in the mail. Low and behold the offer was 92K!!! What? Called HR and told her I think there is an issue, you said 95K and I got the package and it says 92K. She finally calls back and says I never said 95K. I said yes you did because I wrote it down. I do financials all day long, I doubt very much I made a mistake. Than she starts yacking about how they have to temper my expectations and how the job does not pay what I expect. Its no reflection on my experience or my abilities. Here I am thinking, than what is this based on? Finally I said its unacceptable. She asks what do I want. I said 97K + 4 weeks vacation. 2 days later I got it. Said yes and than I declined. My current employer offered me a better deal. Considering their repressive bureacratic culture I am glad I did not go.
