Merck is very much overated in their status as a company, especially in
the culture of the people who work there. With all their money, they
are very antiquated in their systems. Everyone is a manager, those few
who are left, who aren't managers are treated like low class citizens.
And their contractors are treated like slaves. The difference in class
structure is very obvious. They have too many managers per one
employee. They hire about 80+ contractors per year to save money but
they risk the accuracy of the data of their clinical studies, because
new hands are always touching them. A good thing about Merck is that
they pay very well, however you'd better watch yourself because someone
is always waiting to hit you below the belt in hopes to get ahead.
Your coworker that smiles and shares stories with you everyday may be
telling the higher ups some negative things about you so they can look
good for some type of promotion that may never come anyhow. With the
layoffs, the morale is horrible because everyone is afraid to loose
their job and looking for other jobs before that wretched day comes.
It's like walking on egg shells. No one is secure and confidence is
low.
