| Specialty Business Manager |
As one whose family had always worked blue collar at Merck, to me it
was a real honor to work at Merck in highly responsible white collar
positions - 2 marketing positions, 1 sales management. But, by the time
I left I realized this was the worst career move I had ever made. As an
employee and a manager I can easily say that Merck lacks leadership or
any kind of leadership development. I was harrassed by one supervisor,
went to HR to discuss how to handle the situation only to be told that
I was different anyway - by HR! I was told that my demeanor (HR
actually said my constant smile and greeting people) was disruptive, my
car (a convertible) was not conservative and too showy (in a lot of
3000 cars how did she evewn know my car!), and that I had presence,
that when I entered a room I captured attention and this was not good
either. I thought the problem was me. After I finally left the company
I realized it was Merck. As a manager I protected my reps from
micromanagement. As a manager I stood up and supported my reps when it
was needed or deserved. I actually spoke up in meetings with upper
management, and I actually disagreed with some tactics or decisons.
This was not appropriate behavior at Merck. At Merck either you keep
your mouth shut and conform or you get killed.
