Merck & Co. Inc Tax department was run like a military boot camp, by the
head master (VP of Tax). Communication was nearly non-existent and all
of the tax functions (sales Tax, Fed, State, Property) were in
competition with each other and separated. You are assigned a specific
task to complete and are not to work or get involved in any other task
(almost robotic atmosphere, complete your piece of the puzzle and sit
there and wait for the next piece)
The diversity of the department was okay but the ages of personal were
not good because most of the people were old school ??been there over 20
years?? (the gap between people under five years and 20 years was nearly
non-existent in a department of approx. 45 employees. This lent it self
to an atmosphere, which was resistant to change, and did not appreciate
or reward new ideas. The technology was at least ten years behind the
times for tax software, (still input manually into excel and tax
programs), although an initiative was taken just before I left to get on
a tax platform Corptax and start making use of electronic means).
The working hours there during the tax season (June 15, through
September 15) were long and hard. The last three filing seasons I spent
there averaged about 55 through 90 hours a week. Getting progressively
worse as the September 15 deadline approached (including pulling all
night affairs the last two tax seasons to get the return out the door).
Salary is just a bit below market but the medical benefits and extras,
employee medical services, gym, lunch and learn, ball fields, caf??,
stores were all great and offset the difference in pay and made working
in the tax department a little more bearable.
Rating the company as a whole I would recommend them but have serious
misgivings about recommending anyone to the tax department until they
make changes to the leadership and improve there technology.
