Although it has been knocked for being a bank within the asset
management industry, I have always found working at Mellon, particularly
in one of the asset management subsidiaries, a very good experience.
The corporate culture can vary from subsidiary to subsidiary, but my
subsidiary is a very flat organizational structure that encourages
everyone's input to the decision-making process. At times, everyone
grumbles about the lack of clear leadership, because it seems it takes a
while for everyone to agree on the proper direction. But I always say
that people would grumble even more if leadership was decided
unilaterally and imposed in an authoritarian manner. The culture
requires a great deal of patience, persistence and diplomatic skills,
In the end, the best ideas are rewarded. In my experience, there is
very little diversity, although more diversity would be welcomed. The
hours are very reasonable and sometimes frustrating for the very
ambitious, because others aren't logging the necessary hours to make the
whole firm successful. The dress code is casual. The opportunities for
advancement are limited within the asset management subsidiaries,
because many of them tend to be smaller organizations, but there is
always room to move to other subsidiaries.
