The overall business outlook for the company is strong. It has a number
of very solid asset management subsidiaries. Many of them are currently
or have recently had some product performance troubles that have proven
to be a set-back to the overall firm, but management has stood behind
the subsidiaries and been patient with them as they have righted their
troubles. From a career perspective, joining the firm now could prove
to be very good timing, as the depressed price of the stock and the
potential for rapid improvement of performance will mean improving
income and asset appreciation. There are some growing pains currently
going on with a revamping of the distribution channels that any
salesperson coming into the organization should have clarified. Mellon
Financial has taken on a huge effort to better co-ordinate sales across
all of the channels and it has not been executed well. It appears in
the short run to be putting up additional hurdles for the good
salespeople to make sales and rewarding the busywork of a bunch of long-
term Mellon Financial employees who couldn't find anything else to do.
