Unlike Company headquarters on the East Coast, our Boulder, CO office is
very relaxed with a casual dress code, and a primarily young, healthy
and active staff. Most folks here use alternative transportation
regularly like taking the bus or biking. We have a great culture here
with Toastmasters meetings, book clubs and other employee activities.
There is a locker room with showers so many people use their lunch hour
to take a run on the nearby Boulder Creek Path.
Most people work from 8 to 5, but McGraw-Hill also offers Flex Time,
working from home, or working longer but fewer days each week.
The ethnic diversity in Colorado is lacking, and that is reflected in
the employees at our office. I see that as a problem because people can
be insensitive to people of non-Caucasian background simply because they
do not have that kind of interaction. I have witnessed multiple
politically-incorrect remarks by co-workers and managers.
There are some opportunities for advancement, but overall there is a
feeling of a "good old boys" network. Management seems to go about
promoting people in a "sneaky" way, and I wouldn't expect a promotion
anytime soon, being relatively new to the company.
