Account Supervisor McCann-Erickson is one of the largest advertising agencies in the country. I support the Sony Picutres Entertainment account, with a focus on Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment (video/DVD). Sony had a terrific 2002 with such titles as Spider-Man, Men in Black , Mr. Deeds and XXX. I place all media for Sony and provide promotional partnerships that link the movies to other packaged goods products or services. McCann- Erickson LA is more of a "traditional" media shop, with a focus on media placement services, rather than creative execution or integrated marketing communication solutions. This, to me, is a drawback to the agency, as there is limited vision within the management on the ability to adequately service clients in the future. McCann works in a matrix structure of team execution that trys to service the account with the best media solutions available. As this is a service- oriented business, employees are expected to work beyond normal hours. A typical day could run from 9:00am to 9:00pm. The entertainment business is very competitive and as the ad agency supporting a major studio, expectations are very high and client direction can turn very quickly resulting in detailed and time-consuming changes to media plans. Office attire is very casual. Most employees are in jeans and casual shirts. Some senior level management will wear more appropriate business attire. Client meetings will usually include more forwal business wear. Friday is considered "Casual" day, but it would be hard to distinquish this day from any other. The diversity of the company includes all ages and races. The long hours tends to create a higher than normal turnover rate of employees, who seem to burn out on the regiment. The first two years with the company showed no system of employee review and advancement was based more on who stayed around, rather than talent. The team operates very lean, which means employees are often called upon to wear many hats. The recent addition of a VP of Human Resources has instituted a new policy of yearly employee reviews, which may improve the opportunity for growth and advancement within the company. McCann-Erickson is a blue chip agency, and will be a noticeable addition to anyone's resume who is seriously interested in a career in advertising.
