My personal experience as a Marriott employee has been extremely
interesting to say the least. I joined Marriott in January of '03 and
am coming to my one-year anniversary. Previous to Marriott I was
employed in the Telecommunications Industry for seven years in sales,
sales management and most recently as a Director of Sales. The
transition to Marriott was not easy and to be candid, I am still
contemplating whether this is the right career path for me. Coming
from the Telecom Industry, I am accustomed to always being challenged
each day in my position, I am the type of individual who needs and
thrives on challenge and the fast-paced; high-tech world of Telecom was
best-suited for that. The Marriott sales world is less than
desireable. If hospitality sales is all you know then it will probably
work, however, if that is not the case, I would probably not recommend
a career shift into hospitality. I do not find the daily work
enjoyable or even challenging at the least. I find my position to be
mundane, boring and extremely low paying. The hospitality sales world
is not the place to be when you want to actually make money. The pay
structure is below satisfactory and the skill level of the sales staff
is extremely low grade. In addition, the management staff for the
sales department is spread so thin that they are not able to be
effective in any way shape or form. In addition, the amount of
adolescent behavior that is shown among colleagues is shameful. For
anyone coming from outside of the hospitality industry, they would face
extremely high turmoil in trying to assimilate into the hospitality
environment. On the positive, you will not find another company that
takes care of its associates as Marriott does, outside of salary that
is. Opportunities for advancement are phenomenal as well, because of
the amount of locations Marriott has and the ability to cross-train and
advance into positions based on your own proven success. With regard
to dress code, Marriott is definitely conservative and extremely
stingent when it comes to what is and what is not allowed...however,
they do a horrible job of communicating this clearly to new employees.
Work hours are also a major downside of employment with Marriott. If
the pay were much higher then the hours would not be an issue...but
coming from an industry where I made over a six figure base to a
company where I ended up making 1/3 less than my initial base six years
ago is ridiculous! The hours to salary ratio is most certainly poor!
In summation, my overall recommendation would be that anyone from
within hospitality who is considering a shift to Marriott should be
quite pleased as they would be accustomed to the career type. However,
for anyone coming from outside the industry I would not recommend the
change and if they still consider it, I would say they definitely need
to think long and hard before making the leap.
