The working atmosphere had one of the most negative approachs in getting
the job done. People holding responsible positions had no inkling as to
what was expected of them, but were fast to pass the buck and point
fingers. Senior management in many positions ignored the the tell tale
signs of impending problems as long as they were able to divert the
arrow that was the doom that finally occured. Merrill was a dynamic
organization that I was proud to be a member of, although overstaffed
with uncaring and many incompetent employees. Unfortunately no one
listened when told of this and now it is not #1 on the hit parade, with
the firm holding its own until able to be sold someday to the chagrin of
a dismayed retired employee force. Even today Google dropped us fom the
list of participants of their upcoming IPO, leaving 30 on the list and
not the once proud Merrill Lynch.
WHAT HAPPENED?? There was no moral or desire to work hard, as the new
regime hired in the late 90's had termination on their mind and power
for their own personal. Many solid, decent hadworking people were
affected with much talent to offer, yet were held back because they
possibly would make their superior look bad. What a farce.
This is not said in a bitter atmosphere, but with the sincere hope that
some lessons were gained and that there will be a rise from the ashes to
the respect, dignity, and moral integrity this firm had enjoyed for so
many years and stll can salvage a fine repution. I truly hope so,
because "I CARED AND STILL DO".
