MC Sports is a specialty retail chain dealing with sporting goods such
as baseball, basketball, fitness and ski equipment. The company is a
low volume high margin business that on average takes in 4 to 6
thousand a store per day. Most stores do not have more than 15
employees including a Store Manager, Assistant Manager, and two
Associate Managers.
I was an associate manager which is an hourly position as are all
positions in the store except the Assistant and Store Manager. A
typical day would be to punch in and assist customers. The primary
focus is on customer service as their new acronyms are TOCS and FOSY
(Truely Outstanding Customer Service) and (Focus on Sales Yields).
Opportunities for advancement are limited because of the limited number
of positions in each store and the fact that MC Sports is not
expanding. In fact they took a 4 million dollar loss last quarter alone
during their usually most profitable ski season which accounts for 33%
of all their yearly sales. Because of this they've frozen all
management salaries! The worst way to control expenses in my opinion.
Hours for a Store Manager and Assistant manager are typically 40 hours
and Associate manager (although full time position) rarely works more
than 33 hours. Dress code is khaki pants and a MC Sports polo shirt
which you must pay for.
