Fortunately for me, but unfortunately for you, I was blessed with an
internship at Lucent Technologies the summer before I was hired. That,
coupled with decent grades made my job offer virtually secured. During
the interview I had (which was less rigorous than someone else might
have), I had all day interviews with three different groups. I was
interviewed by at least four people per team, with concern being given
to my technical skills, my specific job aptitude, my fit within the
company. I have since conducted these interviews myself. Lucent will
ask even a new hire to conduct an interview as part of a hiring team.
In this way, everyone is comfortable with new hire, and they are not
just assigned a job from a hiring manager. I remember that the
interviews were not just about what technologies I could command.
Lucent is much more academically driven than that. They figure they
can teach you whatever they want you to know. They are more concerned
with your proven ability to learn. I had Tai Chi down on my resume,
and one interviewer asked me about that. They really do read your
resume. He and I ended up joining a Tai Chi Class at Lucent.
