Lucent still suffers from top-heavy senior management who lack focus,
vision, accountability, and the ability to work collectively for the
benefit of the organization. That said, LU has become more customer-
focused as of late. But initiatives to cut costs in our product line
have degraded quality, in both hardware manufacturing and product
software testing (both now very outsourced).
Morale is still very low. Long hours and threats of more layoffs are
the norm. Performance is not evaluated in any realistic sense... since
ratings are mostly percentile-defined and not based upon merit any
longer. Although the company did hire too many people in past years...
much of the more seasoned/able domestic talent is now gone with
layoffs, since no real effort was made to retain people of quality.
Lucent has an amazing history, and it really was and is (to some
degree) a great place to work... but top management is simply sucking
the life out of the company with no regard for shareholder value.
Diversity is stressed, hours can be flexible. Mostly casual/business
casual.
