The normal interview process was not exactly followed when I was hired.
I was an employee for the company already, but was 8 months away from
having the required professional status for the job. However, since I
was the one with the most knowledge of silviculture, I was asked to be
an interviewer on the interview panel, as well as write the more
technical questions. The interview panel consisted of myself, the
division superintendent, and the Canadian Regional Manager. The
interview was roughly 1-1.5 hours, with half of the interview questions
dedicated to technical and strategic silviculture related questions. The
other half of the questions were oriented to determining personality and
problem solving capabilities. Candidates were chosen by the division and
Canadian managers after a provincial wide job posting campagn. Four
people were brought to Dawson Creek to be interviewed in person. The
responses to interview questions were then discussed between the three
interview panelists. After going through the process with the two
managers, they decided that they had under estimated my readiness to
take over the department, and offered me the job. However, I had to
obtain my professional status with a year and they would provide me with
a consultant forester to assisst with the professional duties as an
interim measure. This is not the normal hiring process, but is an
example of how drive and determination can pay off for employees within
the company.
