Louis Dreyfus' staff consist mostly of lawyers, traders, finance and risk
management specialists. It's reputation is to make money in the trading,
buy back at low's and re-sell at high peaks. The market strategies are
extremely effective in always making money. If the company finds that an
agricultural product is decliningg, they will close the trading desk even
after 20 years of operation (meat and livestock).
There is a core and small group of employees who have been with the
company over 10 years that appear to run the show behind the scenes.
Employees are viewed as risk objects rather than people and often are
disregarded in their views or opinions. In last layoff, individuals let
go were two employees 1-3 years away from retirement, women and people of
color with one white male, to look O.K.
Louis Dreyfus will be around a very long time. It began in the 1850's by
Louis Dreyfus. It is currently run by his great grandson. However, Mr.
William Dreyfus is not involved with company business as much as
international needs. He and the President are unavailable to speak with,
even with gross misconduct on part of managers. Communication is frowned
upon and laughter enjoying one's job is discouraged.
Overall, if one is not interested in career advancement, doing their job
for 8-12 hours a day with minimal breaks, high standards of quality work
with minmal market salaries, but high benefit provision, it may be the
place for you. Just don't expect to speak, have comraderie with other
employees, have your opinion requested or be considered a human being
rather than a risk object.
