Job Title Workplace Survey
Test Engineer Employed since 1987. This is a very large corporation in the aerospace field, so there are many inflexible rules and timekeeping requirements due to our government contracts. The company is required to forbid discrimination, harassment; and follow all federally mandated rules to the letter. Environmental concern is extremely high due to federal, state and local oversight. Sunnyvale is a large manufacturing plant. Engineers are of very diverse heritage and culture (generally US citizens), and often celebrate that diversity. Dress code is informal, especially for non-customer contact positions; coat & tie not required, and dress jeans acceptable in most positions. Safety is a very big concern of management. There is a lot of flexibility in hours: 5/40, 4/40, 9/80, very flexible starting/quitting times from very early to late morning, but not much weekend shift work required of professionals. Compensatory time is paid only after working 5 hour/week over scheduled hours, or any time worked on day off; or time can be accumulated and used later. Advancement is not fast, and takes effort; Lockheed senior employees have gone on to high public and federal offices. Job openings and opportunities are posted for the whole company and competition is strong. Many engineers prefer the technical ladder to going into admin functions, and advanced engineers get good pay and benefits. Reasearch and development, and well as design and manufacturing skills are often needed, so most engineering specialities can find an opening. There are many company benefits: medical, dental, insurance, 401k, credit union, free gym, nice cafeteria, credit union, employee clubs, etc. The excessive bureaucracy charactistic of a large company may be frustrating to some, but once you get used to it, it's not onerous. Change is slow and difficult to implement. Project crises may occasionally require short-term efforts involving overtime, comp time, flex time, etc. This is one company where the work is literally "rocket science".
