LEGO Company is truly a unique business with an incredibly powerful and
alluring commercial brand but it is an employer you can not understand
or value fully without experiencing it first hand. Once you're in
however you can not avoid getting the "brick in the belly" and the
loyalty to the brand grows exponentially. However, times are tough for
this private family owned business as historically little consideration
has been given to "value add" to its stakeholders, the Christiansen
family. But times are changing... The business has a refocused
strategy, has undergone major change at the executive management level
and is facing the global market with a degree of commercial maturity
not present until now. To support the commercial turnaround it is
embarking upon on a period of significant culture change from a welfare
based organisation founded on family values, security and comfort to a
performance driven organisation that embraces, recognises and rewards
execution and results. Rationalisation of fixed costs, internal
reorganisations and the commercialisation of
HR are having very visible and tangible results internally... however
beware... not
everyone understands, appreciates and buys in to these change
strategies nor the consequences of change so don't go in with rose
tinted glasses and expect everyone to be gung-ho, optimistic, motivated
and dedicated. Observers have commented that it still lives its value
of "fun" too much and people need to "work". Life in some places is
still slow, relaxed and comfortable but this will change.
