I found that working at Kohl's was abusive, supressive and retaliatory.
The store manager used the schedule as a tool to punish people who
called sick, had a family emergency, or required a personal day off the
previous week. Often the store manager would not approve a personal day
off if it was to be used due to sick time.
The company does not provide sick days, only 3 personal days and those
to only full time staff.
The store manager is a micro manager. She is untrustful of her
employees and keeps the staffing to a minimum so that everyone is
overworked. Morale is very low in this store and about half of the
employees are looking for transfers or new jobs.
A short time ago, a large furniture company was holding a job fair in
the area and the amount of Woburn Kohl's employees who applied made one
of the recruiters ask an applicant, "Why are there so many people here
from Kohl's?" The response of the applicant was, "Management is
terrible."
Kohl's also permitted the store manager to schedule part time people to
work 40 hours, without ever upgrading them to full time. Some people
have worked 3 years at 40 hours/week and they would still part time, if
someone did not blow the whistle on this practice.
A union was contacted to represent the Woburn store and when management
learned of this, they brought each associate into small meetings with
the store and district managers to "explain" what a union would mean to
them. This terrified many of the employees. This was an unfair act on
the management's part to interfere with the union petition signing.
Job postings are a joke and sometimes the positions are not posted. The
store manager decides, prior to posting, who will get the job. In a few
cases, the position closing date was not reached when the announcement
was made, as to who was filling that position.
Kohl's in Woburn also pays less than the surrounding stores for the same
jobs. The average pay at Kohl's in Woburn is less than $10/hr., which
is poverty level in Massachusetts.
Kohls' corporate structure is top heavy. There are many, many layers of
management, all who are paid handsomely. With bonuses, store managers
can earn over $100,000. The typical full time store associate will not
see $20,000.
I would not recommend working for Kohl's, ever!
