I was hired for a position I was not qualified for or did not receive
the training to do the job as D.O.N. . After 3 Mon. I was offered
another position as unit coordinator and accepted . I spent most of my
time on the phone trying to find replacements for call outs on each
shift.filling out FL 2's for client payments,aquired pressure ulcers
reports,tube feeding reports. weight loss reports, and filing in for
call outs for floor nurses frequently on all shifts.Corporate was
frequently in the building due to frequent complaints about the building
beinging in poor repair,or due here to weight loss and increases in
pressure sores.ect. They were curitous but did not talk to nursing staff
below the DON. position.Administrative nurse Department Heads were
frequently helpful, and would communicate on needs and how to improve
them .There were frequent inservices to train staff or to inform of
defficiences or need for attitude changes. There were constant
bickering between nursing staff CNA's about being pulled from there area
to fill in for absent staff. which was a constant problem . The quality
of CNA ,house keeping , and food services staff was frequently poor.
Turn over in these departments are freqent,and ther was a retention
program in progress.The staff that has been there for years are not very
compliant or accepatable to change.Staff ws requested conatantly adsked
to work overtime,many worked 12 - 16 our shifts. Usually the same staff
could be counted on to work the extra hours. There was a policy that
required you to make up hours ,but it was not enforced often.Staff RN's
were responsible for meds treatments and assesing resident's needs and
refering needs to Doctor , family or other departments. She was also
responsible for the behavior for her wings needs amd problems. If she
was in a tight spot she could not count on help from othe staff members
adminstrative staff. Every one had to wear uniforms or specific attire
that were not in the front office.Ther was a dress down day on
payday.Opertunities for advancement were usually offered infrequently
it didn't seem to matter if you qualifird or not.within the faclity.As
far as I could see there was no program funding for extending your
training or for advancement programs. If you chose to apply for
advancement you had to get your education on your own. I do know that
the administrator started out in the accounts office and worked her way
to the top, but provided her own education. How ever in the Corperate
circle for this Co.advance is done through need. and you can be promoted
or transfered To a new faclity or work in the another faclity to learn
that position.Sometimes other faclity staff are trained in this manner
ie, social workers, and admimission personal.there have been persons
holding these positions in the facility in Graham who were not trained
at all but were coached by the asministrator.The adminstrator fills in
for Almost all of Faclity Department heads if they quit or are
dismissed.
