Kimberly-Clark has a unique culture, which reflects its roots in the
Midwest and in the consumer products industry. The culture values
consensus, decency, and fairness -- creating a fairly conservative, but
friendly, environment. The focus is on winning in the consumer products
marketplace and being an efficient as possible. This focus partially
reflects the company's manufacturing roots, where cost competitiveness
is a key goal.
The workplace environment is outstanding. The primary offices are in
Neenah, Wisconsin and Roswell, Georgia. The Roswell office is a great
places to work - free and convenient parking, free health care from the
on-site doctor, cheap cafeterias, nice offices with on-site gym, etc.
It is a beautiful campus, almost like working in a park or garden.
Dress is causal, even for senior executives. It varies from smart
causal for the more professional functions (executives, marketing,
marketing services, finance) to jeans and t-shirts in the manufacturing
sites. This is not a company that promotes people based on style or
clothing choice.
Hours vary. A lot of employees work a standard 8-5 schedule, taking
time for lunch or to work out. Marketing, finance, and the executive
teams work the longest hours, usually 10-12 hour days. During crunch
times, hours can be as long as 70-80 hours per week.
There are huge opportunities for advancement, for the right people.
Average performers can expect a lot of lateral moves. Top performers
can be promoted aggressively into different roles. The key is
delivering results and getting sponsorship from senior directors and
executives. Promotion is largely based on performance and visibility.
The company is changing. The CEO (Tom Falk) is driving change to the
culture and systems -- focusing the company on higher-margin
opportunities and making the culture more performance-oriented. It's a
fun time to work at K-C, with lots of changes in the right direction.
