HIRING LAW STUDENTS
KS pretty much follows the route of other firms. They interview on
campus and at job fairs for law schools around the country. They also
hire through referrals and head hunters. As a law student, your
interview process with KS will mirror those of other firms. During the
summer you will clerk and be invited to return or not. As with other
large firms, having someone to bat for you in the end is crucial. You
must have the favor of a partner or influential associate.
KS used to give you an automatic permanent offer upon inviting you back
as a second-year clerk. They stopped doing this in 2001. Now, there is
no promise you will get a permanent offer even after spending your full
second-year there. You will be expected to drink, party, snooze, and
make the attorneys fill comfortable with you. Or, you will not be
invited back.
The firm is partial to top tier schools, as all large firms tend to
be. However, regional schools such as Georgia State, Mercer and Univ.
of Georgia are large feeder schools. UNC is a top tier school and is
heavily recruited from. Sometimes a student from NC Central will gain
entry into KS.
KS does actually invite clerks from minority job fair interviews.
However, this does not necessarily mean they have any intention of
actually giving you an offer at the end of the day.
Partners do not usually go on campus or to job fairs, but a senior
associate is usually in attendance. Try to figure out who the senior
associate is prior to coming for the interview. Focus on them, the
others won't really matter.
HIRING LATERALS
Laterals pretty much have to go through three rounds of interviewing.
There is the initial interview, the dinner with partners and with your
spouse if you have one, and a lunch. They'll ask you questions such
as: Where do you see yourself five years from now? What do you enjoy
most about your practice?
This firm has MAJOR turnover, and they want to see that you are settled
and will be around for the long haul. It appears that having an
assertive tone and ambitious hopes for the future is appreciated.
KS likes to hire individuals who look good on paper and in person. Your
appearance is important. KS also focuses on individuals who appear to
be well-rounded. Problem: Most well rounded individuals do not enjoy
working and dying for a firm.
