Hours: flexible, but had to be available either by phone or in person
most days from 8:30 to 6pm. Allowed telecommuting in out department, but
not widespread through company except on a limited basis.
Culture: at the pasadena regional offices, IT was extremely corporate in
feel, although not as much as as in other busiensses. Dress for men was
jacket and tie, but suit optional. Upper Management generally wore
suits, both sexes. VERY casual attire forsecretarial staff, often
unprofessional.
Very diverse workforce, with extensive efforts to recruit and retain
minorities throughout company.
Opportunities for advancement primarily based on education and work
experience. OFten a masters degree was required, with absolutely no care
as to what it was in. For exampe, one person I know was eligible for a
purchasing manager position as a result of having a masters in Musica
history, whereas someone else with over 15 years experience but no
master's was ineligible. Consequently, you saw many middle management
folks geting MBAs from places like the University of Phoenix.
EXTERMELY bad glass ceiling for women. Unreasonable expectations by some
managers for family people (men and women) to work 60 hours plus with no
set schedule even. One manager I worked for demanded that her part-time
salaried staff work full-time withou additional pay (they subsequently
took the issue up with Personnel, who put an end to it).
Extremely elaborate remediation processes are in place for poor
performing non-exempt (non-salaried) staff. Strong unions.
Raises for exempt staff were tied to financial, patient satisfaction,
quality of care outcomes. Bonus program was implemented for all salaried
positions in all locations,. Physician bonus program was separate.
