Job Title Workplace Survey
Manager For years I assumed that there was very little difference between the large international public acconting firms, but after spending 4 years at Andersen and then starting at KPMG, I was shocked by the actual differences between the 2 firms. KPMG was surprisingly disorganized. There seemed to be very limited national leadership guidance to ensure a consistent 'go to market' strategy in different regions. There was NO focus on client service/delivery. We were encouraged to sell, sell, sell, and once big projects were sold there was no focus on actually delivering a high quality product for the client. Partners do not hesitate to sell projects that they are not sure they can staff, or even have the skill set necessary. The corporate culture was that of second rate individuals trying to prove themselves. Compared to people at Andersen, and freinds at E&Y and Deloitte, the people all seemed extremely arrogant, and VERY materialistic. As a participant of a flexible work arrangement, I had a very hard time sticking to my schedule due to lack of competent resources. Becuase so many of the seniors and staff are not competent enough to deliver quality work, it required a significant amount of additional time by my spent correcting work products, and actually performing much of the work. Seniors, staff, and even managers seem to be very unmotivated, and just go about their day trying to pass the time. I was extremely happy that my work was recognized and I was promoted to Manager early within a few months of joining KPMG, however, there was no increase in compensation which led me to believe that they do not really value my contributions, or that I am being very badly taken advantage of.
