Corporate culture varies greatly by office, though my experience has
been that generally, KPMG is one of the "less stuffy" of the big firms.
This is generally a great aspect of the firm, in that the people are
easy-going and good to work with... and getting the projects completed
is done with the attitude that you will try to have as much fun as
FASB's allow you to have (which obviously isn't much). At times, this
does mean that the atmosphere is not as professional as it may be with
other firms, and when I've worked with professionals from the other big
firms (e.g. E&Y, PwC), it seems that they are a minor step above us...
sort of like they're the Harvard and we're the well-run but slightly
less grand public university.
Dress code is typically business casual, but depends on client. Again,
KPMG employees seem to be less "polished" than PwC & E&Y.
Diversity also varies greatly by office. In Mpls, there was a good mix
of male/female, but due to local demographics, I believe only 1-5
African Americans at any one time. In NYC, diversity is very strong,
with what seems like more people on visas working now than typical
American born-and-bred employees.
