The overall growth outlook for this company is quite good. 2004 has
been another banner year for the firm's advisory practice (which grew at
about 70% year over year). Much of this growth has been due to the
demand for Sarbannes Oxley services (regulatorily required operational
audit to support external financial reporting). Though Sarbannes Oxley
requires that this type of operational audit be performed every year,
the expectation in the firm is that 2004 was the year where most of the
work was done, and future years will require much less work since most
of the documentation and review performed in 2004 can be piggybacked in
future years. As a result, there may be less work in future years
related to Sarbannes.
Despite this, members of the firm's RAS practice have good reason to be
optimistic.
1) the risk advisory practice is still tiny in comparison to the firms
audit practice, which has been used as a pipeline for these types of
services.
2) senior leaders have been aggressive about seeking new business
3) though KPMG as a firm is very conservative about which lines of
advisory services it is willing to go to, the non-compete agreement with
BearingPoint will end soon. In addition, the higher profitability of
the advisory practice makes it much more likely that KPMG will expand
the line of services it will offer, further increasing its growth
potential.
