When interviewing as a summer associate, I started with an on-campus
interview that lasted approximately 20 minutes, and ended with an on-
the-
spot offer for a callback (which I later learned was against
protocol).
I came back for a callback and met with 5-6 lawyers at different levels
and in different practice groups. Several weeks later I received an
offer for the summer, and I arranged to come back into the office twice
to meet more people before making my decision.
Having participated in the interviewer side of the process as well, I
can tell you that there are few to no guidelines given on interviews in
the callback process. On campus people are screened by grades,
diversity, and personality, but the callback interviews are primarily
based on poise and personality. Hiring decisions can take a long time
because things go through a committee process.
